In Texas, state officials are fully behind the Trump immigration agenda, and they are taking action to force cities into compliance. In Miami-Dade, the mayor is abandoning the quasi-sanctuary status it claimed under Obama. In sanctuary cities like Chicago and New York, Democrats are ready to go to court to hold onto the federal funding Trump is threatening to withhold.
But in San Francisco, they’re going those cities one better. Not only are they refusing to relinquish their sanctuary status, they are ending their participation in an FBI counter-terror intitiative that started in the wake of 9/11.
From Fox News’ Malia Zimmerman:
Critics say the sanctuary city by the bay’s latest decision to forego cooperation with Washington, by dropping out of the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Force, could put lives at risk. The JTTF has been credited with foiling 93 Islamist terrorist attacks and plots against the U.S. since 2001, including 12 this year, according to the Washington, D.C.-based Heritage Foundation. There are another 1,000 investigations into suspected terror activity nationwide.
The JTTF doesn’t actually have any direct correlation to the deportation status of illegal immigrants, and the FBI has nothing to do with ICE, but San Francisco officials want to distance the city from federal law enforcement authorities in the Trump era. They are bowing to activists who say that counterterrorism under this administration will be focused too strictly on Muslims, potentially coming into conflict with California law.
Retired FBI special agent Mark Rossini told Fox News that the city was making a mistake that could have national security implications.
“In my opinion, the decision by the mayor and the police chief to withdraw the San Francisco Police Department from the JTTF is really narrow-minded,” said Rossini. “Politics aside, and the mayor and leaders of San Francisco have their right to their opinion, political opinion and beliefs. But when you’re working in law enforcement, law enforcement should know no politics.”
Which, of course, brings us right back around to their original sanctuary city policies. This is all, ultimately, about law enforcement being hindered and stifled by left-wing politics. The law IS that illegal immigrants are subject to deportation. These cities are flaunting the law to satisfy Hispanic activist groups, appease businesses that exploit these immigrants, and expand the government-dependent population. And they are so committed to these goals that they’re willing to give Islamic terrorists safe haven as well.
