Political groups, also known as Super PACs, have been greatly associated with Jeb Bush and Chris Christie in the 2016 presidential race. While both are still hopefuls for the upcoming presidency, both candidates have not been able to increase their poll numbers this year.
Super PACs have spent $76 million alone on candidates, which is an increase of $71 million from the same period in the last election.
Record spending has been tied to a sharp increase in advertising, and many super PACs are being forced to pay as much as 10 times more than normal candidates. Right to Rise, a group that is supporting Jeb Bush’s president, has spent $42 million so far in an attempt to improve Bush’s chances of becoming president during the November 2016 election. Even with high expenditures, Bush still has a mere 9% support rating from fellow Republicans for the nomination.
Chris Christie’s Super PAC has spent $9 million in advertising, but has under 4% of the vote so far in the polls. Traditionally, there is a cap on the amount of money charged to campaign organizations that are buying advertising. There is no cap on the amount of money that can be charged to Super PACS during an election.
Steep rates have not dissuaded these political supporters from curbing advertisements despite candidates not rising in the polls.
