Trevor Noah and The Dumbest Attack on Trump This Year

We’re only ten days into 2019, and we’ve already got a strong contender for the lamest attack on President Trump all year. We’re sure liberal newspapers and comedians will manage to outdo this one by the time we roll into December, but this has a solid chance of making it into the top ten. There’s dumb, and then there’s “so dumb it could only come from the mouth of Trevor Noah” level stupidity.

Noah, in case you’re not following the comedy “news” business, is the dude who took over Comedy Central’s “The Daily Show” in 2016 when Jon Stewart called it a career. He’s just like Stewart, except for the small matter of being completely unfunny. But he’s a liberal and a, ahem, person of color, so we assume his job is secure for the foreseeable future. Although even his catering-to-the-left brand of comedy could be in jeopardy if he keeps making boneheaded attacks on Trump like the one he launched this week. The millennial liberals who make up his audience are pretty moronic, but we’re not sure they’re THIS moronic.

Noah’s big revelation on Wednesday’s show? That in 2004, Donald Trump gave a commencement address at Wagner College in Staten Island. And here’s what he said: “I’ll tell you, to me, the second-most important thing after love what you do is never, ever give up. Don’t give up. Don’t allow it to happen. If there’s a concrete wall in front of you, go through it. Go over it. Go around it. But get to the other side of that wall.”

You probably don’t need us to spoon-feed you the “comedy” behind this clip. It’s self-evident. Hurr, durr, Trump wants a wall, but in 2004, he said that people should go through a wall. Irony!

We suppose as far as throwaway jokes go, this clip from a 2004 speech wouldn’t be the worst one. But to actually turn it into a politically-relevant attack? To actually write about it in the Washington Post?!

Oh, didn’t we mention that? They actually used this weak premise to write a nearly 1,000-word screed about Trump, the year he had in 2004, and the honorary degrees he’s gotten from other universities. This last thing they only wrote so they could mention that he got one of them revoked for being a big meanie to Muslims.

As for Noah, he used the video to make this remark:  “If there’s one thing we know, it’s that nothing will stop immigrants from trying to come to America. This is a place that people dream of coming to, because people trying to make a better, safer life for their families will do anything to achieve that dream. And I know Donald Trump understands this — because of this video we found from 15 years ago.”

Actually, there is something that will stop immigrants from trying to come to America. It’s when this country becomes just as bad as the places they’re fleeing.

That’s what Trump is trying to prevent, and no Democrat-obstructionist wall is going to stop him.
