Alabama Senator Jefferson Beauregard Sessions III, spoke with Politico, to discuss the rise of Donald Trump. The friendly senator urged Republicans to get behind Donald Trump as their presidential nominee.
“Trump is where the Republicans are,” he said. “If you’re going to be a Republican leader, you should be supportive of that,” he stated, referencing Speaker of the House Paul Ryan. Ryan has yet to endorse Trump, but the two have been in close contact in recent weeks in an effort to set aside their differences.
Sessions stated, “My advice is to listen and accept the will of the people.” The Senator famously wore a “Make America Great Again” hat at a Rally in Mobile, Alabama last August in an effort to show his support for a Trump presidency.
The senator and Trump have many of the same views in terms of taxes and immigration. The senator praised both Trump and Bernie Sanders in his interview. The two campaigns have caused backlash against the stalled Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP), which Sessions says “would endanger you.” The senator went as far as stating that supporting the agreement would lead to Republicans “having a hard time getting elected.”
Sessions believes that giving the people what they want is in the best interest of the Republican Party: Trump.
