Clinton’s Lead over Trump Shrinks after Orlando Tragedy

Hillary Clinton, the presumptive Democratic nominee, watched her lead over Donald Trump shrink in the wake of the mass shooting tragedy in Orlando, Florida. The two candidates clashed over how to respond to the worst mass shooting in the history of the U.S. that left 49 people dead.

The poll, conducted by Reuters, showed Clinton ahead of Trump by 10.7 points, down from a 14.3 point lead last week when the American-born shooter declared his allegiance to ISIS and opened fire in a gay night club in Orlando.

Trump used the attack to reaffirm his security proposals, including the banning of immigration from countries with a “proven history of terrorism” against the U.S. and its allies. Trump’s proposal echoes his earlier promise to ban Muslims from entering the country.

The presumptive Republican nominee also called on new laws that make it difficult for suspected terrorists to purchase firearms.

While Trump’s proposal may not sit well with Republican leaders, voters are mostly in favor of the GOP nominee’s plan. According to the Reuters poll, around 45% of Americans are in favor of banning Muslim immigration. Some 70% of Americans, both Democrats and Republicans, want to see at least moderate gun regulations.

Clinton’s response focused mainly on improving intelligence and taking measures to defeat the Islamic State.
