Paul Ryan Unveils Republican Answer to Obamacare

House Speaker Paul Ryan revealed the Republican Party’s alternative to Obamacare on Wednesday, which would repeal the Affordable Care Act while maintaining some of its the most popular provisions.

The proposed healthcare agenda is part of Ryan’s plan, called “A Better Way.”

Republicans have challenged Obama’s Affordable Care Act since it was first enacted in 2010.

Ryan says the act has driven up the cost of healthcare for consumers and limited their choices while “burying” healthcare providers and employers under a slew of regulations.

While Ryan’s plan calls for the repeal of Obamacare, it would keep some of the most popular aspects of the law. Children would still be permitted to stay on their parents’ healthcare plan until the age of 26, and people could not be denied coverage due to preexisting conditions.

The plan also includes familiar Republican proposals, including allowing Americans to buy health insurance across state lines and expanding health savings accounts. Block grants would also be given to states to run the Medicaid program.

Americans who do not get insurance through their employer would receive a refundable tax credit. Under the Affordable Care Act, subsidies are provided to some individuals who cannot afford insurance and do not qualify for Medicaid.
