Senate to Vote on Gun Control Measures Monday

The fight for new control measures will reach a critical stage next week when the Senate votes on four proposals. The move comes as Dems push for tighter gun laws and Americans are showing signs that they’re willing to accept limited gun restrictions.

The call for stricter gun laws comes after the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history in Orlando, Florida last Sunday. A gunman opened fire in an LGBT nightclub, killing 49 people and wounding at least 50 more.

A new poll from Reuters shows that 71% of Americans are in favor of moderate regulations and gun restrictions. The poll showed eight out of 10 Democrats and six out of 10 Republicans are in favor of tighter gun laws.

Connecticut Senator Chris Murphy and his Democrat colleagues spoke on the Senate floor for 15 hours straight to demand Congress to take action on gun control. Republicans pledged to vote on the measures to prevent people on the terror watch list from buying guns and to expand background checks.

The Senate will vote on four proposals on Monday. One proposal calls for government to prevent terrorist suspects from purchasing firearms. Another proposal would require court approval within three days for government bans on individuals’ rights to purchase guns. A third proposal would alert law enforcement if a person investigated for terrorism within the last five years attempts to buy a gun. The final proposal would expand the background check procedures to include sales of all firearms, including those sold at gun shows and online.
