Donald Trump fired back at the media on Monday night following reports that questioned the presumptive Republican nominee’s event in Des Moines, Iowa aimed at raising money for veterans. The event was held on January 28 and was thrown on the same day as the Fox News debate that Trump did not participate in.
The candidate’s campaign claimed that they raised $5 million for veterans, with Trump contributing $1 million of his own money in the process.
The Washington Post reported on Friday night that only $3.1 million of the $5 million raised can be accounted for four months later. Reports on Monday night that the fundraiser did not reach the monetary value that Trump claimed irked the GOP nominee. The Washington Post further stated that they couldn’t locate the missing millions.
Corey Lewandowski, Trump’s campaign manager, announced that the event raised $4.5 million as some donors backed out on their donations. Later in the day, Lewandowski recanted his claim and stated that the $4.5 million figure was incorrect, and he didn’t know how much the fundraiser netted in total.
Trump fired back on social media on Monday, stating that the figure is between $5 – $6 million. “Much of the money I have raised for veterans has already been distributed,” claimed Trump on Twitter.
