Donald Trump and Mexico’s president Enrique Pena Nieto will meet in Mexico City on Wednesday before Trump gives his highly anticipated speech on immigration policy in Arizona tonight.
Trump made the announcement on his Twitter account, stating, “I have accepted the invitation of President Enrique Pena Nieto, of Mexico, and look very much forward to meeting him tomorrow.”
Nieto invited Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump to visit Mexico last Friday. The opportunity will allow Trump to talk to the president of Mexico one-on-one. Trump has criticized Mexican families in the United States that live in the country illegally and has proposed building a wall on the U.S. Mexican border.
The meeting for Nieto was summarized on his Twitter account, with his tweet stating: “Promote the interests of Mexico in the world and, principally, to protect Mexicans wherever they are.”
Clinton’s campaign confirmed that the Democratic presidential candidate has yet to accept the invitation. The campaign stated that only the speech given by Trump in Arizona will matter. Nieto’s call for a meeting with Trump comes as a surprise following Trump’s comments that illegal immigrants from Mexico are “criminals and rapists.”
Trump has also stated that he will force Mexico to build the proposed wall along the country’s border. Nieto has stated that Mexico will not pay for a wall to be built.
